Yemeni protestors break windows of the US Embassy
Sanaa – Ali Rabea
Yemeni protestors break windows of the US Embassy Sanaa – Ali Rabea One Yemeni was killed and 6 others were wounded when hundreds of people broke into the US embassy in Sanaa. The furor follows the release of an American amateur movie which some in the Muslim community consider insulting to Prophet Mohammed and Islam.
The film sent waves of fury across the Arab world. Protesters were able to take down security barriers around the embassy, setting car tyres on fire and breaking the embassy's windows.
A number of protesters climbed the walls of the building before security forces were able to take them away after anti-riot reinforcement arrived. They fired tear gas, and used water hoses to disperse the protesters. Religious preachers and Islamist activists had called for the massive assembly.
Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi apologised to US President Barack Obama.
Al-Houthi Shiite group had called for protests to expel the American ambassador. Key religious scholar Abdel-Majid Al-Zindi, who America accuses of supporting terrorism, called for a day of ‘Anger for the Prophet’ similarly to what happened in other countries.
Arabstoday's correspondent is still hearing intensive gunshots in the surrounding area to prevent protesters from approaching the embassy building.
A source told Arabstoday that the American ambassador and all other embassy staff had left the building.
Arabstoday correspondent saw some protesters returning and carrying electronic gadgets, probably ransacked from inside the embassy building.
Yemeni president described these incidents as “barbaric” and said that “those who attacked the embassy do not realise the Zionist powers' long-term plans, especially those that authored and published a film insulting the honourable prophet.”
“Their plan aims at harming our relations with the US.”
