The US embassy in Cairo denies involvment in the killing of protesters in 2011 Cairo – Mohammed Al Dawi The US embassy in Cairo said on Saturday that it played no part in the killing of protesters in Egypt’s January 25 revolution that overthrew Hosni Mubarak .
In a statement released on Saturday, the embassy denied reports that accused its staff and vehicles of being involved in violence.
According to the statement, there is no truth to reports that US embassy employees used diplomatic vehicles to kill or injure protesters on January 28, 2011 in Cairo.
The embassy explained that some of its vehicles were stolen on that particular day.
The statement also pointed out, that the US embassy in Cairo follows Egyptian customs procedures and regulations applicable to the import of diplomatic cars.
Arab Today published a few days ago, information from sources from a fact finding commission, suggesting the involvement of the US embassy in violence committed during the 2011 revolution.
According to the sources, the US embassy has around 1000 diplomatic vehicles, while other embassies have maximum 150 vehicles.
The sources also said that some of these vehicles were brought into Egypt illegally, whilst some of the vehicles’ license plates were later changed.
Many of the US embassy vehicles look similar to those used by the Egyptian national security and intelligence service vehicles.
Although the US embassy claimed that some vehicles were stolen on January 28, 2011, the embassy didn’t inform the police until 19 days after, the sources said.
The sources added that when the licence plates on the embassy cars were checked, the fact finding commission found that several of the vehicles were involved in the killing of peaceful protesters. It was reportedly also discovered the vehicles had not been officially registered which indicates the embassy illegally smuggled the cars into the country.
