Some civilians affected by the conflict southern Sudan The Sudanese Interior Ministry will be assigned supervision of the humanitarian activities in the country instead of the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security, a cabinet source revealed to Arabstoday. The cabinet source, speaking anonymously , said that the Sudanese government has called the three founders of the tripartite initiative – the Arab League, the United Nations and the African Union to send their representatives to Sudan in order to start working on the humanitarian project in the Blue Nile province and South Kurdfan. But none of the organisations responded to the Sudanese government.
The source stressed that the Sudanese government is committed to implement the terms of the initiative under the supervision of the local authorities, but he said that the three sponsors of the initiative are not acting seriously in that regard.
He added: "Maybe they are waiting for the UN Human Rights Council to convict Sudan in its meeting planned next week in Geneva.
"Sudan's record in human rights is good, but some fronts are trying to make it look bad in order to exploit it for political purposes."
Arab League envoy to Sudan Salah Halima denied this claim. She said the current delay was temporary. The work will start after the completion of various meetings between regional and international organizations in Sudan.
Halima revealed that the Arab League decided to appoint the Egyptian physician Tamer Suleiman as its official representative to follow the implementation of the tripartite initiative in Sudan.
"Suleiman will arrive soon in the provinces of the Blue Nile and South Kurdfan to prepare the preliminary study for the humanitarian needs there" said Halima.
According to the Arab League envoy, Suleiman has previously chaired several medical convoys to Darfur, and contributed significantly to the establishment of the "Model Villages" in the province in order to encourage more volunteers to come to it.
Halima expected that Egypt will be holding a main role in implementing the tripartite initiative after the open support President Mohammed Morsi has shown to this initiative in his speech at the latest Arab League meeting. Morsi said that the Egyptian role is significant for the success of the initiative "due to the massive political weight Egypt has in the region."
