Salafists denounce Ahmadinejad's OIC visit to Egypt

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (L) is on a historic visit to Cairo Egypt's Salafists have denounced the visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Cairo for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit, saying that it would increase "Shiite penetration" in the region. In a press statement, Salafists said that they fear the Iranian President's visit to Egypt may go beyond the stated purpose of attending the summit, to the extent that it leads to political rapprochement at the expense of Egypt's interests.
They demanded that the Iranian President is taken to task over the persecution of Sunnis in Iran, adding: "Egypt must speak to the Iranian President as the largest Sunni Arab state, and we must not forget Egypt's commitment to the protection of all Sunni states of any political, cultural or military background."
The Salafists said that Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi must question Ahmedinejad about the importance of Gulf security in the region as a whole. They also demanded Egyptian condemnation of the Iranian regime's "military and political support" for Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, where "women and children are being killed."
Salafists said allowing Ahmadinejad to visit Tahrir Square would send the "wrong message," considering the critical circumstances Egypt is going through.
The statement also said that the Iranian President's tour of Egypt should not include "visiting mosques and Shiite places, as this would be a historic failure of Egyptian diplomacy."
