Calls for immediate cease-fire Salva Kiir Mayardit, the President of the Republic of South Sudan, has expressed deep regret over the outbreak of fighting and tribal conflicts because due to cattle raids. The conflict between the tribes of Lou Nuer and Murle have taken place in Pibor, Jonglei state.
In his new year speech, he called for the promotion of security and peace throughout the southern state. Salva Kiir asked the Lou Nuer tribe to immediately withdraw from Murle areas. He warned some politicians involved in supporting such actions.
Violent fighting and tribal clashes have been raging for five days. In the meantime, the cabinet council is expected to hold an emergency session to discuss the implications of the clashes, in order to save the deteriorating situation.
According to sources, Lauren Gupandy, the President of the High Commission for Human Rights, has paid a visit to the Pibor, Sunday.
In a statement to "Arabstoday" Deng Shol, a Member of the Parliament excluded the possibility “that some political parties could be involved in the events,” He announced that parliament members of areas involved are carrying out field missions. He stressed that the government is eager to end the current conflict, which he described as "naturally occurring" between the pastoral tribes in the south.
He referred to the seriousness of the conflict affecting security in the sout, and announced that the Southern political parties are in agreement to stop it immediately.
Musa Al-Mak Kor, the former Mayer of the Upper Nile state and a prominent leader of the Shilluk tribe, the largest tribes of the south, said that the United Nations started to make some preparations to help saving the crisis, but most likely, that will clash with the nature of conflict and the increasing numbers of participants. Al-Mak Kor excluded the possibility of the classes to extend to other areas in the south, in contrary to what some have argued. He added that the increase of the number of arms after the long war, social competition and weakness of the administrative authority in the region, led to raising the conflict between the two tribes.
Jonglei mayor, Kwal Miang, announced to "Arabstoday," over the phone, that the situation in the Pibor is under the control of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and the United Nations troops. He noted that the government has sent additional forces from the police that will arrive there in a few hours. An accurate number of victims has not been made available, but "The next few hours might reveal the real numbers.” He explained that the contacts between his government and the leadership of the State are ongoing until a full control of the situation in the Pibor
