Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi
Cairo – Akram Ali
Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi Cairo – Akram Ali A public opinion survey revealed that 77% of Egyptians approve the performance of President Mohammed Morsi after 60 days in power in Egypt with only 13% disagreeing. The rate among university graduates reached 72%, while 81% of the middle-class expressed their approval of the President's performance.
The survey, which was published by the Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Al Youm in cooperation with the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research, said that 60% of the respondents confirmed that they would vote for Morsi if he was nominated again for the presidential elections.
28% of those elected Shafik, Morsi's opponent in the presidential race, would now give their vote to Morsi.
76% of those who elected Morsi would vote for him again, 19% are unsure and 5% would not vote for him again.
On the other hand, 28% of the people who voted for Shafiq said thay would now vote for Morsi, while 40% said they would still not vote for him.
Morsi's programme is targeting five issues for the first 100 days: the 'loaf of bread', which is a policy designed to subsidise the production of bread, security, waste collection, fuel and traffic.
The participants said that the most improved issue was fuel, followed by waste collection. The least improved policy is the 'bread loaf' issue.
The poll shows that the shortage of fuel is more proeminent in South Egypt and in the countryside.
58% of those surveyed said that they felt better in terms of security. Security seemed to be an important issue in urban areas.
58% of those surveyed feel that traffic has improved. This opinion is mainly shared in big cities in the South of Egypt rather than the North.
51% of those surveyed felt that waste disposal and collection have improved. More complaints about waste collection have been recorded in the North Egypt.
Finally, only 34% feel that the 'loaf of bread' issue has been improved, with 43% of the participants saying that they haven't seen any difference. 10% reported that the problem is now worse.
This is the first time that an Egyptian president is being assessed by the population.
This assessment is considered as being one of the tools for popular control and for the evaluation of the performance of state institutions.
