Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb continues to operate in the region   Rabat – Hussein Idrissi Moroccan authorities have reportedly succeeded in dismantling what they identify as a “terrorist cell,” as the National Bureau of Judicial Police referred 12 of its members for prosecution. Members of the cell allegedly worked clandestinely to recruit young Moroccans into joining al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb [AQIM], the regional wing of the extremist organisation.
Authorities accused the cell of forming illegal gangs and taking up arms without a license in order to commit terrorist acts threatening Morocco’s national security, one judicial source told Arabstoday. They are also accused of being affiliated with a banned religious group.
Morocco’s Interior Ministry also received information suggesting the cell was working in tandem with a similar organisation in Algeria, easing cross-border infiltration between the two countries.
