Adly Mansour replaces ousted Mohammed Morsi Cairo -  Akram Ali Adly Mansour has been sworn in before the High Constitutional Court (HCC) in Cairo on Thursday, following the overthrow of former Islamist leader Mohammed Morsi. Security remained tight around the court on Thursday morning, in preparation for Adly Mansour's legal oath as temporary Egyptian president, until the election of a new one.
The court was silent before the arrival of judge Adly Mansour, who was named head of the Supreme Constitutional Court by Morsi himself. Court members and the general assembly attended the oath, led by Army Chief General Abdul Fatah Khalil Al-Sisi.
Before the constitutional court, Mansour said: "I swear by God to uphold the Republican system and respect the constitution and law and safeguard the people and protect the nation."
Egypt's army is currently holding former Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi in detention along with senior aides.
"Morsi and the entire presidential team are under house arrest in the Presidential Republican Guards Club," Gehad El-Haddad, the son of a top Morsi aide, told AFP news agency on Thursday. Haddad's father, Essam El-Haddad, widely seen as Morsi's right-hand man, was among those held, he added.
Morsi's Defence Minister, Armed Forces Chief General Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, announced Morsi's overthrow on state television on Wednesday, as police began rounding up key Morsi aides and leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Warrants have been issued for the arrest of a total of 300 Brotherhood officials, state media reported.
Saad al-Katatni, head of the ousted president's Freedom and Justice Party, and the Brotherhood's deputy supreme guide Rashad Bayoumi were arrested and transferred to prison, the official MENA news agency reported.
Thousands of protesters camped out on the streets of Cairo for days celebrated wildly through the night at the news of Morsi's downfall, cheering, whistling, letting off firecrackers and honking car horns.
