The Jordanian Opposition Parties demanded the government to put an end to its policy of starvation

The Jordanian Opposition Parties demanded the government to put an end to its policy of starvation The Jordanian Opposition Parties Higher Coordination Committee, composed by seven parties, demanded the government to put an end to its policy of starvation and eradicate the political powers responsible. According to the Committee, radical economic and political changes in the government need to be adopted soon.
The Committee held one of its regular meetings on Tuesday, where it criticised the government’s fuel price rise. Issuing a public statement on the topic, the Committee considered the government’s decision an assault to the living conditions of the people which will only but perpetuate the poverty in the country.
A representative of the Committee expressed: “We do not demand the government to temporarily suspend the measure. We want them to cancel it completely. Not only do we not receive any form of support from the government for purchasing fuel, but we are also subject to high taxes that exceed 40% of the price.”
The Committee demanded further clarification on the calculation of the final price as well as on the agreement signed between the government and International Monetary Fund. The latter is blamed responsible for the recent increase of fuel prices and as well as the price of water and electricity.
The spokesperson for the Coordination Committee, the Secretary General of the Jordanian Communist Party, Munir Hamarneh, presented a statement in which they urged the government to reconsider its economic and political policy and find alternatives for responding to the current financial crisis. The statement also demands the government to stop stealing money from its people and obeying to the orders given by the International Monetary Fund.
The Committee has warned the government that adopting these political and economic measures and starving the Jordanian population will spur general discontent, for which the outcome is unpredictable.
They also pointed out that the deterioration of the security conditions in the country could lead to an increase in crime, warning a possible rise in illegal possession of arms trade. The Committee therefore urges the government to rethink its methodology of appointing ministries and take the principle of competency and freedom into consideration.
