President Morsi’s party will abstain from demonstrations in Tahrir Square
Cairo - Akram Ali
President Morsi’s party will abstain from demonstrations in Tahrir Square Muslim Brotherhood sources have announced the movement’s plans for Egypt’s landmark second anniversary of its 2011 revolution on Friday. According to the Brotherhood, it will not demonstrate in Tahrir Square to commemorate January 25, instead rallying around community campaigns such as planting trees and street cleaning.
Brotherhood sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, announced that Egypt’s ruling Freedom and Justice Party would launch three projects on Tuesday under the title, “Together we build Egypt.”
Representatives of six political parties and 10 political movements meanwhile met in Giza’s Dokki district to coordinate demonstrations planned for January 25. Opposition movements will rally around the slogan: “Achieve the goals of the revolution or leave.”
A permanent operations room will monitor protests across Egypt, bringing together various opposition groups. A statement, issued on Monday evening, called for peaceful revolution undercut with “legitimate self-defence.”
The statement was signed by the Wafd Party, the Union of Revolutionary Youth, the April 6 Movement, the Nasserist Party, Kefaya ["Enough"] and many others.
The Egyptian Revolution Party in Alexandria announced its rejection of the leadership of President Mohammed Morsi and his government, led by the Muslim Brotherhood, blaming both for “new crises, emerging every day” in the country. The government represented “the fuse of ignition,” the party claimed.
"The Brotherhood’s control over all aspects of the state has increased since the January 25 revolution,” the statement said.
The statement meanwhile called on all Egyptians to “stand united” against "tyranny, oppression and the mismanagement of the country,” emphasising that positive participation and peaceful resistance were necessary to the success of January 25 celebrations and the future of Egypt.
