Mubarak shocked Egyptians on Monday, appearing revived and smiling in court
Cairo - Akram Ali

Mubarak shocked Egyptians on Monday, appearing revived and smiling in court A Cairo court will consider an appeal from Egypt’s former dictator Hosni Mubarak on Monday, following a period of two years in prison. The court, led by judge Mohammad Reza Shaukat, will consider a defence appeal to release the former leader pending a retrial.
Chancellor Mohammed Alepeshbaishe, who heads the Cairo Court of Appeal technical office, has confirmed: “The appeal will be considered in the Police Academy, headed by Mohammad Reza Shaukat.”
Mubarak faces charges of financial corruption and responsibility for the deaths of peaceful demonstrators during Egypt’s 2011 Arab Spring revolution, which ousted the president.
A judicial source told Arabstoday that the court will not release Mubarak on Monday due to ongoing investigations into alleged financial irregularities.
A note filled by the former president's lawyer, stated that the period of his incarceration from killing protesters and from corruption is over, and that he should be released immediately in conjunction with Egyptian law.
Investigations would continue for 15 days, during which time the ex-leader would remain incarcerated, sources claimed.
Public prosecutor Mahmoud Hefnawi has meanwhile confirmed forensic doctors would launch an inquiry into the health of the former president, viewing the possibility he might be returned to Tora prison.
“A committee will finish checking Mubarak’s health in one day to determine the possibility of his speedy return to Tora prison,” Hefnawi said.
The 84-year-old Mubarak who is being held at a military hospital in Cairo, has been treated for a heart condition, fractured ribs, fluid in the lungs, depression and high blood pressure, according to lawyers and official accounts.
At one point last year he was even declared clinically dead as he slipped into a coma.
However on Sunday Mubarak shocked court attendees and Egyptians alike as he appeared revived, waving and smiling coyly to supporters.
