Egypt Constitutional Adviser Ali Awad Saleh Cairo – Mohammed Al Dawi All articles of Egypt’s suspended constitution are subject to change, an inside source told Arab Today. A source from inside the constitution-writing panel said if a large number of articles needing altering, the committee would suggest forming a whole new constitution.
The source added that the group was operating without any pre-set ideas or plans, and will work until it has written a constitution for all generations.
The panel, appointed by interim President Adly Mansour, began work two weeks ago on amending Egypt’s constitution, in preparation for parliamentary and presidential elections.
The group of 10 experts will propose changes to the constitution written under former President Mohammed Morsi, which was suspended following his overthrow on July 3.
Egypt’s Presidential Adviser for Constitutional Affairs, Judge Ali Awad Saleh, failed to attend attend the second meeting of the constitution-writing committee on Sunday.
Reliable sources told Arab Today that Saleh’s role was temporarily suspended after the committee finished studying the articles of the constitution, but that he would receive the draft amendments proposed by the committee when they were completed.
A meeting of the panel on Saturday marked its third week of reviewing the suspended constitution, in light of the proposed amendments sent by several different organisations, institutions, and political parties.
The committee is working on classifying the over 3500 proposals, which arrived via e-mail, post and fax. The suggestions came from 98 institutions, 199 individuals and 22 political parties before the deadline on Sunday.
Its work on the new national blueprint is expected to be completed in around a month’s time.
