Increasing efforts have been exerted by international and regional organizations to contain the Libyan crisis during the recent period, due to its negative effects on the neighboring states and Europe. League of Arab States hosted a quadrilateral meeting to find a solution for the Libyan crisis as soon as possible.
The meeting renewed its confidence in the internationally-recognized presidential council despite the attempts adopted by the House of Representatives to cancel the council and to amend Skheirat Agreement. It also announced a visit scheduled to be held by the Arab League’s Envoy to Libya to Tobruk next week in an attempt to bridge the gap of difference among the Libyan conflicting parties.
The European sided welcomed the results of the meeting hosted by the League of Arab States, as High Representative of EU for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini announced that the coming meeting over Libya will be hosted by the EU in Brussels.
On their hand, Egyptian diplomats expressed their support for the results of the meeting, saying that the meeting came to support the Egyptian efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis. They added, in a statement to “Arabs Today”, that the Egyptian diplomatic efforts aim to support the political solution for the Libyan crisis to end the current conflict witnessed in the country.
On his hand, Director General of League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul-Gheit revealed that his envoy to Libya is scheduled to visit Tobruk during the next week to hold talks with the Libyan officials in the framework of the current efforts aiming to find political solution for the Libyan crisis.
The statement came during a press conference gathering between representatives of African Union, European Union and the United Nations on Saturday. The officials held a meeting to discuss the recent developments witnessed in Libya during the recent days.
Aboul-Gheit added, “Our major objective is to support the Libyans to achieve democratic transition through coordinating between the four organizations. He added, “We agreed to support the Libyan presidential council to reach a political solution as soon as possible.”
He added that they condemned the attacks launched by the extremist militias against the Oil Crescent area on March 3, calling the different parties for suspending the military operations and to protect the oil infrastructure.
He continued, “We also discussed the recent serious developments witnessed in the Libyan capital of Tripoli and the political situation after these developments. We renewed our commitment to the political agreement concluded in the Moroccan city of Skheirat, as it provides the general framework upon which the Libyan parties can reach inclusive settlement.”
The director general of the Arab league stressed support for the internationally-recognized presidential council, calling the other parties, including the House of Representatives and the High Council of the state to start a serious dialogue aiming to treat the controversial points and to reach compromises paving the way for completing the required steps to overcome the current crisis.
In the same context, UN Envoy to Libya Martin Kobler said that Libya needs a unified army working under a civilian authority, praising the meeting hosted by the League of Arab States. He stressed that the UN is keen to monitor the cease-fire agreement, and works to gather the Libyan conflicting parties on the negotiating table.
He praised also the efforts exerted by the presidential council headed by Fayez Al Sarraj, saying that it managed to defeat ISIS extremist group. He added that 70 percent of Libyans support Skheirat agreement concluded in Morocco in 2015.
On her hand, Mogherini said that the meeting came to unify the Libyan parties, revealing that they allocated $ 120 million to protect the health and civil society in the country. She stressed that the Libyans suffered for a long time from the current crisis witnessed in the country.
