Al-Turabi and Al-Mahdi reconciled after  verbal squabbles Khartoum – Abed Algayom Ashmeag Two opposition leaders of the  Popular Congress Party (PCP), Hassan al-Turabi, and National Umma Party (NUP), al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, have been reconciled following sharp verbal attacks and hostile remarks, amid news of both parties agreeing to work on overthrowing al-Bashir’s regime in Khartoum.
The squabbles between both leaders began when Al-Mahdi launched an attack on Al-Turabi’s party during his weekly sermon and claimed that he offered the Umma Party to participate in a military coup. Al-Turabi responded by calling al-Mahdi a “liar”.
Al-Turabi said that “al-Mahdi’s history is filled with negative stances and constant disappointment to the opposition”, pointing out his reconciliation with former Sudanese President Jaafar Nimeiri, which, according to al-Turabi, contradicts with the opposition’s role.
Efforts exerted by opposition parties succeeded in joining both al-Mahdi and al-Turabi in an extensive meeting, followed by al-Turabi’s statement that both parties agreed on overthrowing the regime, explaining that the revolution should come from the people.
In statements to the media on Monday, Hala Abdul Halim, the leader of a minor opposition group known as Haj, told the media that mediation efforts by other opposition leaders had successfully reconciled Al-Mahdi and Al-Turabi, in order discuss the coming political phase and the current issues in Sudan.
In the same context, leader of Sudanese Congress Party Ibrahim al-Sheikh described the reconciliation of the two leaders as “a rebirth to the forces of consensus,” as it puts them on the right path to achieve their goal of changing the regime. He pointed out that al-Mahdi agrees with them on toppling the regime, and that the meeting was attended by a number of party leaders of the National Consensus Forces coalition.
