New York - UPI

The head of the police union for the New York Port Authority wants to know how a jet skier managed to get on runways at a major airport without detection. Paul Nunziato wants the port authority's inspector general to investigate how the perimeter intrusion detection system at John F. Kennedy International Airport failed to notice a man scale an airport fence, cross two runways and enter the terminal without notice, the New York Post reported. Nunziato was reacting to a story in the Post Sunday about how Daniel Casillo, 31, of Howard Beach got into the airport after his jet ski sank and he swam to shore. Casillo was detected only when he approached a Delta Airlines worker near Gate 10. He was arrested and charged with criminal trespass. He was wearing a bright yellow life vest when arrested. Nunziato also wants an investigation into cost overruns for the security system and the port authority's relationship with Raytheon, which developed the system. The detection system has been plagued with problems since it was announced in 2009.
