London - Arabstoday
Emirates Air Line will be open to the public from midday 28 June 2012. Enjoy great views and a unique ride across the Thames on the Emirates Air Line cable car. Running between North Greenwich and the Royal Docks, and with a journey time of less than 10 minutes, the cable car will provide easy access to the O2 and Excel Centre. The terminals are also close to the Tube, DLR, buses and river boat services. The Emirates Air Line will be the first urban cable car system of its kind in the UK, providing a new and exciting river crossing in the area. The cable car will allow pedestrians, wheelchair users and cyclists to cross the river Thames within five minutes, from terminals at Emirates Greenwich Peninsula and Emirates Royal Docks. Emirates have sponsored the fast, regular and accessible crossing in a deal worth £36m over 10 years. The crossing will encourage regeneration in the area and provide access to visitor attractions. The Emirates Air Line will be able to carry up to 2,500 people an hour across the river in each direction, something that would otherwise take 30 buses an hour to achieve. As a new landmark on the London skyline, it will connect local communities, improve access to visitor destinations either side of the river and speed up river crossings. It will provide: Direct access between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks in five minutes Cabins every 30 seconds Direct link between the O2 arena and the ExCeL Centre An accessible and bike-friendly service A new visitor attraction for east London A low-emission form of transport Another travel option for Oyster cardholders It will also encourage regeneration at The Royal Docks and Greenwich Peninsula, each a dedicated enterprize zone, with plans for a floating village, SS Robin and Siemens Technology Centre to be opened on the north side of the river. The Emirates Greenwich Peninsula terminal will be near the main pedestrian squares and the O2 Arena, making it easy for visitors and local people to use. The Emirates Royal Docks terminal will be on the northern side of Victoria Dock, close to Royal Victoria DLR station and a short walk from ExCeL London.
