
The 37th General of Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will begin here Monday and will last till November 20th. Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf will represent Kuwait at the international conference. The conference, held every two years, will witness the participation of UNESCO member states, observers, non-member countries, as well as representatives of international and governmental institutes in addition to Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). The General Conference aims at shaping UNESCO's future policies and also focuses on enhancing relations between organization members. It also will aims at developing relations between UNESCO and other international entities. The 37th Conference will officially re-elect Irina Bokova as Director General of UNESCO for a period of four years. The 58 members of the Executive Council will also be chosen during an election process to be held on November 18th. Kuwaiti former Minister of Education Dr. Hassen Al-Ibrahim is running for a spot at the Executive council. Recently, Kuwait donated USD 100 million to support UNESCO's youth forum. The GCC-member country also donated USD 3.543 million to support UNESCO's future programs. Kuwait is aiming at gaining the membership of several committees at the UNESCO.
