An evening to pay homage to badwi song was organized Saturday at Ibn Zaydoun movie theatre, in Algiers, as part of tributes initiated by the ministry of culture, in collaboration with the National Office of Copyright and Similar Rights. The evening, held in recognition of the contribution of Oran’s badwi song to the promotion of Algerian musical heritage, was an opportunity to shed light on badwi song in the country’s west, as many musical pieces were performed in an atmosphere rich in sounds and colours, in the presence of a large audience. A documentary about Sahrawi badwi song and highlighting known artists performing such a musical genre, like Cheikh Abdelkader Hadadji, Cheikh Madanu, Cheikh Hamada and Cheikh Khaldi was projected at the event. The tribute continued with songs of the badwi heritage by Bouzid El Hadj, Houria Hadjaj, Abdelkader Khaldi and Mohamed Racine. Some of the beautiful Oran badwi songs performed by five artists, including Cheikh Djilali Ain Tadles, Abdelkader Bouras and Abdelkader Khaldi, have been published on CDs.
