The Netherlands held events to celebrate 200 years of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Maastricht on Saturday, with four heads of state attending the festivities in the southern city.
The Kingdom of the Netherlands started between 1813 and 1815. To celebrate this birth, a national committee arranged events and festivities from November 2013 to September 2015.
The celebrations on Saturday started in the center of Maastricht with the arrival of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, and the Federal President of Germany Joachim Gauck and his partner Daniela Schadt.
These particular heads of states were invited due to the historical ties, and the current ones between the countries.
The four heads of state attended a musical fashion-art show created by artists from Maastricht, Limburg, the rest of the Netherlands and Belgium. The show was followed by a congress at the Vrijthof Theatre with the theme of Reflections on the Netherlands.
