Al-Arish - WAM

Unknown armed men have blown up a main pipeline in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula that supplies gas to Jordan, following a spate of attacks on security checkpoints in recent days, according to the Middle East News Agency (MENA). It was not clear who was responsible for the pipeline blast on Saturday, or if the recent attacks were in reaction to the Egyptian army's overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi on Wednesday. The fire from the blast rose several metres, and was seen from 10 kilometres away, MENA said. The pipeline and other gas facilities have been attacked more than 14 times since Egypt's January 2011 revolution, the last of which was on 4 September 2012. No one was injured during the latest explosion, state news agency MENA quoted officials at the gas company as saying.
