A court in Baniyas in Abu Dhabi has ordered two Emiratis
Abu Dhabi - Arab today

The General Prosecution in Abu Dhabi on Monday ordered four Emiratis convicted of traffic offences to work as petrol station attendants and gardeners.

A court in Baniyas found them guilty of reckless driving that endangered themselves and others and ordered them to perform community service for between two and three months, according to a press release issued by the Abu Dhabi Judiciary Department on Monday.

Following the court order, the public prosecution ordered the two convicts to work as petrol station attendants and the other two as gardeners.

The prosecution has asked the relevant institutions to assess their performance, behaviour, discipline and commitment in the assigned community service.

If their assessment report is not satisfactory, the prosecution has the power to request the court to sentence them to imprisonment for the offences they committed

This is an opportunity for the convicts to benefit from the community service and become law-abiding citizens, the prosecution said.

Under Law No 7 of 2016, community service has replaced prison term of no more than six months or payment of fine for misdemeanour cases.

The Article 120 of the law stipulates mandatory community service including cleaning streets, beaches, parks and natural sanctuaries, teaching uneducated and illiterate people how to read and write, gardening and maintaining public parks, loading and unloading containers at ports and assisting civil defence teams.

As Gulf News reported on March 28, a young Emirati man was ordered to clean the streets of the capital for three months for driving a vehicle recklessly without a number plate, and carrying out dangerous stunts that posed a threat to public safety.

Another Emirati man in Dubai, who uploaded a gruesome video showing a live cat being fed to his hungry dogs, was ordered to clean Dubai Zoo for four hours every day for 90 days, Gulf News reported on March 15.

A young Emirati motorist, who performed dangerous stunts with his vehicle on a wet road in Dubai’s City Walk during rain and damaged property, was ordered to clean Dubai roads for four hours per day for a month, as Gulf News reported on February 24
