New Delhi - BNA
A large number of Indian banks are closed and means of public transportation came to a standstill in Indian today as a result of a protest strike organized by Indian labor associations, however, the Capital, New Delhi and the commercial Capital Mumbai, have not been affected to a considerable extent as the financial markets remain open. Violence erupted in some areas on the first day of the strike, when angry workers who protested against fuel price hikes prevented motorcars from plying the streets, meanwhile local mass media confirmed the killing of a member of one of the labor associations in Impala city in northern India. The Indian parliament is slated to begin its discussion of the public budget tomorrow (Thursday 21, Feb. 2013). The Indian Premier, Manmohan Singh, urged the labor associations to call off their strike, however, they refused. Taxicab drivers also partook in the strike meanwhile schools and business offices remain open. In New Delhi and Mumbai, buses and trains continue to play as usual.
