The U.A.E., represented by the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, TRA, has participated in the 23rd meeting for GCC Telecommunications, Information Technology and Post GCC Ministers Committee, which has taken place in Kuwait.
The meeting, chaired by Ahmed Eissa Al Kandari, Kuwaiti Minister of Transportation was attended by a number of ministers and officials from GCC countries.
Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA Director-General, headed the U.A.E. delegation with the participation of officials from Emirates Post, as discussions touched on a number of important issues related to ICT and the postal sector in the gulf.
During the meeting, the committee discussed a number of important topics, including a unified GCC draft law that regulates businesses and activities within the private sector of the postal industry, handling express courier services, freight and parcels.
The committee also reviewed a report submitted by the Kingdom of Bahrain that presented arrangements carried out on behalf of the GCC countries. The report included topics on participation in the International Stamp Exhibition under the name: "GCC Postage Group for Arab Gulf Countries" and the decision was made to participate again under the same name in the next session of the exhibition in Dubai next December.
The committee agreed to coordinate with the Arab Group and the rest of the regional groups to support the nominations submitted by GCC countries, including the U.A.E., Bahrain, KSA and Kuwait, for the board of the International Telecommunications Union, ITU.
The committee also agreed to nominate the U.A.E.'s Nasser bin Hammad, Senior Manager, International Affairs, to membership of the Radio Regulations Council as part of the preparations for the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, to be held in Busan, South Korea, between October 20th and November 7th, 2014.
The ministerial committee has entrusted the Secretary-General to prepare a proposal at its next meeting on the structure and functions of the Ministerial Committees.
With regards to the international roaming rates between GCC countries, the ministerial committee highlighted the need to complete the study on roaming prices and start a new comprehensive study on 3G and 4G mobile networks, sending the final recommendations to the Secretary-General.
Fadi Shehadeh, Chief Executive Officer of ICANN, presented a report about the steps taken to change the corporation into an international organisation, which was welcomed by the attendees.
