TED stands for ‘Technology, Entertainment, Design’ and its conferences have become famous for finding speakers who provide “riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world”. The app takes that idea to a logical conclusion, offering what the organization calls “talks from some of the world's most fascinating people: education radicals, tech geniuses, medical mavericks, business gurus, and music legends”. Some are people you will have heard of - David Cameron - others are those who are less famous but equally interesting. All aggregated in a single place, the app uses technology to make what would otherwise be elite events available to the wider world. Available for some time on iOS, the democratization of all this knowledge is now rather more complete with the transfer to Android. There are currently more than 1,200 videos or audio recordings and more are being added each week. As for the app itself, the interface is simple, with some highlights at the top and then a longer list underneath. Search, of course, is straightforward, but the best way to use this app is simply to let serendipity take over. Tablets and smartphones are now catered for on Android and the intuitive design is a pleasure, rather than a simple port of the Apple version. If there’s any criticism to be made of Ted, it’s simply that there isn’t yet enough – but it will take you a good while to get through what’s there already.
