Residents of Dammam today will be able to watch the annual Germinids meteor shower. Many people were able to watch the “shooting stars” during the weekend, with 50 meteors seen per hour as earth passes through regions close to the debris from asteroid 3200 Phaethon, which is believed to be a dead comet. Chunks from the debris will enter the earth’s atmosphere and burn at the speed of 35 kilometer per second and form the Germinids. “The sky will be lit with lines of beautiful colors,” said astronomer Mulhim Muhammad Hindi. People will be able to see more meteors than at other times of the year both today and tomorrow, he added. Arabnews
