
Xinhua News Agency reported that Chinese scientists have conducted a successful experiment for wireless data transmission through using Li-Fi technology. Li-Fi, unlike Wi-Fi, which utilizes radio frequencies, uses light emission in order to transfer data. A 1-Watt LED is outfitted with a microchip, which transforms the diode into a transmitting device. A special receiver is required to decode the signal. Brightness is not a factor. This new technology is capable of transferring 150 megabits per second, which is noticeably faster than the estimated China-wide average speed of 3 megabits per second. Chi Nan, professor with Shanghai's Fudan University, believes that Li-Fi will greatly simplify connection to the internet, as Chinese residents are increasingly using LED technology for lighting. Moreover, Li-Fi connection is more secure, the professor noted, as, unlike Wi-Fi, its signal range is visible and limited.
