A shot fired through a door that killed a girl in an apartment in Pennsylvania early Monday may have been the work of a would-be home invader, police said. Taniyah Thomas, 10, was hit by one of several shots fired into the apartment in Washington County, located in southwestern Pennsylvania. Investigators said the shooter fled and never entered the apartment. Taniyah's mother, her mother's boyfriend and a baby were also in the apartment, but were not injured. Investigators said Taniyah appeared to have been woken by the gunfire shortly before 4 a.m., and was hit in the head as she tried to run to her mother's room. "Everybody was asleep when this started," Police Detective Daniel Stanek said at a news conference. "I believe they targeted this residence." Taniyah's grandmother said the girl was planning to be at a cheerleading competition in Pittsburgh this week.
