New Delhi - XINHUA
CCTVs and GPS devices will be installed in public transport vehicles in 32 cities in India for the safety of women, said Indian Finance Minister P. Chidambaram Thursday here. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the proposal to install these devices in such vehicles, said the minister. The cost of the plan would be met from a fund set up to memorize a young woman who was gang raped and died in December last year in the Indian capital. The event triggered a nationwide protest against violence on women in India. The 10 billion rupee (12 million U.S. dollar) fund called " Nirbhaya" fund was named after a publicly known victim of the Delhi gang rape last December. According to the plan, CCTV cameras and global positioning systems would be installed in buses and other modes of public transport. India is repeatedly haunted by rape and other crimes against women.
