Kenya's anti-terrorism police said on Sunday they have successfully recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) near a local school in Mandera county, northern Kenya.

Local Administration Police Commander Charles Mutuma said the IED was recovered after receiving a tip-off from members of the public.

Mutuma disclosed that the IED was live but rusted due to the ongoing rain, adding the LED was capable of hitting objects within 10 meters square radius.

"We have intensified security patrols in the county and along the border with Somalia. We want to warn criminals residing in Mandera County that the law will soon catch up with them," Mutuma said.

Mandera East Deputy County Commissioner Elvis Korir said the IED might have been planted by criminals before the onset of the rains but did not hit the target.

Korir asked motorists and members of the public to be extra vigilant as there might be more IEDs planted on the road side.

The enhanced measures came in the wake of terror attack at the Garissa University College on April 2, in which 148 people were killed and over 70 others injured.

Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday announced that building of the 700 kilometer wall on the Kenya /Somalia border from Mandera to Kiunga has began to keep out the Al-Shabaab elements from infiltrating the county from Somalia.

Ruto warned terrorists and their collaborators that their time was up, adding that the government will apply all measures and security apparatus at its disposal to secure the country.

"We must secure this country at whatever cost, even if we loose business with Somalia, all those who are collaborating with Al- Shabaab will have their businesses closed," he said.
