The chief of the U.N. agency tasked with defending freedom of the press denounced Friday the killing of a Cambodian journalist who was shot while investigating illegal logging in the eastern part of the country.
“I condemn the killing of Taing Try,†Director-General of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova said in a statement.
Bokova said that people and communities must be informed and need information from diverse channels in order to make important personal and professional choices.
“This is why the work of journalists like Taing Try is so essential and why it is so important that those responsible for his murder are brought to justice,†Bokova said.
