Sudanese Speaker demands press independence

Speaker of Sudan’s parliament Ahmed Ibrahim el-Taher has called for greater independence for the country’s National Council for Press. Taher demanded the Sudanese government grant the press body more independence in the interests of freedom of expression and journalistic balance. Web journalism had presented new problems for journalists working inside Sudan, he said. “Providing training and a good salary to media professionals is very much in the interests of Sudanese journalism,” Taher claimed.
