Rome - MENA

Italian Premier Enrico Letta vowed Wednesday that the privacy of Italian citizens and government officials has not been breached by United States agents, ANSA reported. "He underlined that there wasn't a single violation," said Giacomo Stucchi, president of Copasir, parliament's oversight committee on the secret services, after the premier submitted a report. Letta was summoned following reports last month that Italy has been the target of US spying. The issue has been highlighted by recent media reports of electronic eavesdropping and data monitoring by the US National Security Agency (NSA). According to witnesses when Letta made his report, the premier assured the committee that Italy's intelligence operations "are functioning in perfect pitch and guarantee the security of its citizens".
