Chicago - XINHUA

German automaker BMW AG announced Friday that it was recalling 134,100 5-Series cars in the United States to fix electrical problems that can cause the failure of taillights and brake. The recall, expected to begin in October, covers some 528i, 535i, 550i and M5 cars from model years 2008 through 2010 due to problems with the tail light electrical contact points. Increased electrical resistance can cause damage to connections to the lights, which in turn may lead to an intermittent or permanent loss of one or more rear lamp functions, the Detroit News quoted documents filed by BMW with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as saying. The German automaker said it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue, but decided to do the recall due to a precedent set by a 2011 recall for a similar problem. In 2011, it recalled 241,000 of its 3-Series cars from the 2002 through 2005 model years to fix the rear light connections.
