Russia to discuss climate, terrorism with G8

Russia will push for finalizing an agreement on greenhouse gases and a discussion on global terrorism at the G8 summit in Camp David in Maryland, which kicks off on Friday, the Russian government said. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will be representing the country at the summit instead of a newly elected President Vladimir Putin, who withdrew from participation last week, prompting talk about a new cooling in U.S.-Russian relations. Russia wants talks on a global binding agreement on emissions of greenhouse gases finalized at the two-day summit, Medvedev’s press service said on Friday. Moscow also proposed to add the matter of international terrorism to the agenda, the press service said, without elaborating. Topics currently scheduled for discussion at Camp David include Syria, Iran and North Korea, global food safety, non-proliferation, environment and recovering the global economy after the last recession.
