Yangon - XINHUA

France is seeking cooperation with Myanmar in electric power sector, official media reported Saturday. The meeting on electric power sector was held here Wednesday and was attended by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Myint Swe and French Commercial Attache, reported the New Light of Myanmar. At the occasion, U Myint Swe said that the country needs infrastructural development as quick as possible. He said that the electricity is the key to national economic growth and industrial sector development and there had been a growing demand on electricity supply. He hoped that leading companies of France would share their skills and knowledge with Myanmar companies. Meanwhile, the two countries are also seeking cooperation in tourist, education, culture, agriculture and livestock breeding. According to official figures, Myanmar's import from France totaled 34.48 million U.S. dollars in 2012. France's investment in Myanmar amounted to about 469 million U. S. dollars as of March 2013 since Myanmar opened to such investment in late 1988. In April this year, the European Union (EU) has lifted total sanctions against Myanmar, with the exception of the embargo on arms which will remain in place, in recognition of the remarkable process of reform in Myanmar.
