Manama - BNA

A scientific research study was conducted which concluded that it is possible to extract bio fuel oil from the nuclei of palm dates by 10% then to transform it into diesel after chemical processing and also the possibility of extraction of glycerin for use as a cosmetic product. Chemistry associate professor Ahmed Abdurrahman Taha (Ph.D) said that he had conducted a series of experimentations in order to recycle farming waste and to transform it into useful substances, asserting that he has already succeeded in extracting oil from the nucleus of palm dates and then transformed after chemical processing into bio diesel. Dr Ahmed A Taha pointed out that it is possible for the cosmetics industry to benefit from the study results from the by-products of the chemical process conducted for production of bio diesel in order to form natural glycerin for use in cosmetics industry. He added that the solid substances which remain from the transformation process can be useful as animal fodder as it contains a considerable quantity of protein and fiber. As a guess-estimation, Dr. Ahmed A. Taha explained that the number of productive palm trees in the Kingdom of Bahrain is circa 380,000 palm trees according to figures released in 2008 by the Arab Food and Agriculture Organization. The ratio of oil extractable from kernels is an estimated 8% with production reaching 156.7 tons approximately. He pointed out that kernel production of palm trees is around 2070 tons per annum of bio diesel oil is an estimated 3593.5 gallons that is 70% in addition to 11.5 tons of glycerin at the ratio of 100 per ton of bio diesel. The research study was conducted as part of the University of Bahrain (UoB)'s projects partaking in the Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS) 2013 alongside with participation of 120 Arab and foreign exhibiters. The UoB's research study project met with visitors' admiration.
