Cairo - Marwa Yehia
Tunisian singer Latifa has apologised for not singing a national song for Egypt without giving any clear reasons, while singer Mai Farouk was chosen instead to sing ‘Precious Egypt’ or ‘Masr Elghalea’. ‘Precious Egypt’ was written by poet Awad Badawi and composed by Amgad Al-Atafi in the national song initiative launched by former Egyptian Minister of Information Osama Heikal to express the spirit and objectives of the Egyptian revolution. Latifa was the original choice to perform the songs. Recordings for the song were on schedule but the Tahrir Square clashes led to their postponement. The project also included a song from Algerian singer Warda titled “Weladek Ya Masr” or “Oh, Egypt, your kids”. Thr song was written by Awad Badawi and composed by Waleed Saad. The project was postponed by the head of the National Singing programme, Wagdi Al-Hakim after the government resigned, and is expected to resume soon. Latifa had participated in 'Tomorrow' or ‘Bokra’ operetta with a number of Arab singers.
