Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mahmoud Hegazi and Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS) Evangelos Apostolakis attended on Thursday the main phase of the Egyptian-Greek military drills, code-named "Medusa 2017".

In a statement, the Armed Forces said the main stage involves surface, anti-submarine and anti-air warfare exercises, as well as search and rescue drills, gunfire exercises and maritime interdiction operations training.

Speaking on the occasion, Hegazi commended the great performance of the troops participating in the exercises, a matter that reflected their combat preparedness.

He lauded deeply-rooted ties and military cooperation between the armed forces of both Egypt and Greece.

For his part, Apostolakis extolled the high performance of the troops participating in the exercises.

The aero-nautical exercise, which runs from July 30 to August 3, is being held in the Mediterranean Sea.

Egyptian Navy ships participating in the drills, include the Mistral-class landing helicopter dock, named after the late president Anwar El Sadat, FREMM multi-mission frigate "Tahya Misr" and the recently commissioned submarine S-41.

Participating Hellenic Navy units include Hydra-class frigate HS Spetsai, Elli-class frigate HS Kanaris, a submarine and a range of aircraft.
